Councils across the UK are poised for heavy increases in the Council Tax. This will cripple families with autism who are struggling to cope. The Autism Awareness Campaign have named for an autism allowance for parents, carers and autists.

The Autism Awareness Campaign UK issued an appeal to the Labour Party’s ‘conviction politicians’ to speak out on behalf of these who cannot speak out for themselves – the 520,000 Autistic Neighborhood in the UK. The appeal went out to the Labour Party at the 2003 Labour Celebration Conference held in Bournemouth in October.

‘We need to have Labour politicians to speak out for parents, carers and autists who require far more public services in overall health, education, specialist speech therapyand respite care,’ mentioned Ivan Corea in Bournemouth.

The Minister for Children Margaret Hodge speaking at a fringe meeting at the Labour Party Conference stated that it will take 10 years until the National Service Frameworks for Young children is implemented.

‘But what do we do till then, my son is 7 he has no specialist speech therapy does this imply I will have to wait ten years for public solutions – parents, carers and autists find it unacceptable,’ said Ivan Corea.

The Coreas urged genuine and urgent action. Autism is a time bomb waiting to happen. The UK media seems to focus only on the MMR Controversy. But what about the 520,000 folks who desperately need public services. Our youngsters have no specialist speech therapy, no genuine classroom support in several locations of the UK, no respite care for parents and carers.

‘Public services do want reforming, but autistic young children and adults are suffering and struggling without ANY public services,’ said Ivan Corea.

Time and time once again parents, carers and autists come up against a wall of indifference, apathy and expense cutting. It is absolutely immoral – autistic young children and adults are being denied their basic human correct tp public solutions – in numerous regions of the UK, regardless of Prime Minister Tony Blair’s powerful comments on equality of opportunity and social justice.

*Schools must organise normal meetings – every single term – of wellness, education, social solutions, speech therapy solutions, voluntary sector, parents and carers, so that they could meet collectively to assess and evaluate the progress of each autistic kid. Joint functioning and joined up considering is totally crucial where autistic young children are concerned.

*Leisure services are virtually non-existent for individuals with Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome in the UK.The Autism Awareness Campaign in the UK have appealed to Margaret Hodge, the Minister for Youngsters to order and urgent assessment of leisure solutions for individuals with disabilities. In some areas, parents and carers have had to beg for swimming lessons from their nearby pool for autistic children as several centres do not have any provision for kids with SEN.

*The DfES need to come up with unique assessments for autistic kids who are unable or are not entred for GCSE and A Level examinations. At the moment there are no qualifications for autistic children andadults. The DfES should also initiate a UK RECORD OF ACHIEVEMENT – for every autistic kid and adult -informing possible employers the constructive expertise bank an autistic particular person has – in order for them to access the planet of function.

*Autistic folks want special schemes into additional education and larger education.

*We need to have tougher new laws on discrimination and employment – exactly where men and women with disabilities are concerned.

*The Government need to safeguard the rights of autistic people exactly where the Anti-Social bill and the Mental Wellness Act is concerned.

These are only a couple of concerns shared by Ivan and Charika Corea of the Autism Awareness Campaign in the United Kingdom. They have urged Tony Blair, the leader and the Labour Party to re-connect with individuals with Disabilities, such as the Autistic Neighborhood.
